SRJobsReport
for job seekers interested in social responsibility jobs
Ellen Weinreb, Social Responsibility Recruiting
SRJobsReport Spring
2006This
issue of SRJobsReport analyzes 2 years of jobs listings from the 2 biggest
suppliers of CSR jobs postings 1) BSR's jobs board and 2) the London-based 3300-member
listserv, CSR-Chicks. 89%
of the positions posted through BSR are located in the US, 5% in the UK and 3%
in China. 78% of the positions posted by CSR-Chicks are located in
England, 10% in the US, and 6% in other European countries. Over the past 24 months I have identified
over 600 jobs postings meeting
my predetermined criteria:
- The
position must be full time permanent;
- The
job must have something to do with corporate social responsibility (CSR);
- Administrative
junior-level positions are not included (ie: Admin Assistant)
| 5
Key Findings |
-
CSR
job listings increased 48% between 2004 and 2005
-
Peaks
for CSR-Chicks are highest in February
-
Mostly consumer
product-related companies are hiring for CSR
-
Most
of the CSR positions focus on monitoring
and compliance
-
Top
Employers were Business in the Community and BSR
|
The
positions are then coded in my database by Type of Employer. They are as
follows:
- Internal
- Private sector companies
- Associations
- Support organizations such as BSR or IBLF
- Public
Sector/ Multilateral - Such as the World Bank or National Renewable
Energy Laboratory.
- Boutique
- Small consulting firms (headcount around 2-200) such as
Cameron-Cole, Corporate Citizenship Company or Maplecroft.
- Management
Consulting firms - Headcount 200-2000 such as Ernst&Young or
KPMG. Please note that these firms have many types of CSR practices
within the firm, such as Ethics, CSR Strategy, Community Involvement
management or Compliance.
- Compliance
- Monitoring firms such as Intertek, Cal Safety, or SGS.
- Research
- Organizations that focus on research and education such as Great
Place to Work Institute or University of Leeds.
- SRI
- Socially responsible investing organizations such as Calvert or
Institutional Shareholder Services. Please note that BSR and
CSR-Chicks are not the leading job postings sites for SRI positions so the
SRI-related data is not representative of hiring practices within SRI.
- NGO
- Nonprofits such as Oxfam or VolunteerMatch.
The
following chart illustrates the number of postings by employer type. BSR
postings are in orange while CSR-Chicks positions are in green. Note that
most of BSR's postings are internal while most of CSR-Chicks postings are
Association listings.

| Explanation of Key Findings |
|
1)
Number of CSR Job Listings Per Month:
The following chart shows the number of CSR jobs listings per month separated by
source (CSR-Chicks vs. BSR) and year (2004 vs. 2005). The CSR-Chicks lines
are in brown (2004) and red (2005) while the BSR lines are in green (2004) and
blue (2005).
-
48%
increase in listings: There was a
35% and 57% increase in listings from BSR and CSR-Chicks respectively
between 2004 and 2005. Average increase for both CSR-Chicks and BSR
was 48%.
-
Significant
CSR-Chicks Peaks in Feb: Both
years, CSR-Chicks showed significant peaks in February and July with
significant declines in January and March. This suggests February is
the best time to search for a CSR Job in London.
2)
A deeper look at the corporate private sector jobs: Of the 171 corporate
private sector positions, 60% of the positions were posted via BSR.
Below are two charts showing the industries hiring and the types of
positions posted.
Which
Industries Hire for CSR: This next
chart categorizes the corporate private sector positions by industry. Small Business refers to companies as small
as Neal's Yard and as large as Stoneyfield Yogurt. The Other Consumer category includes Disney and Walmart.

Types
of positions in the private sector:
The chart below shows the types of positions companies hire. Most of
the jobs fall into the Monitoring category with 40%.
Environmental-related positions (including environmental compliance) are the
2nd most common-type of position at 19%. The CSR General category are
positions with "social responsibility" or "corporate
citizenship" in the title. The Other category includes jobs for researchers, IT staff, and project
managers.

3)Top
Employers were BITC for the UK and BSR for the US:
The top employers were Business in the Community (BITC) with 41 postings and BSR
with 30 postings. Other employers with over 10 postings were Accountablity
(18), Wal-Mart (14), Disney (14), and Forum for the Future (12).
